There’s something amazing, and even humble, when someone
sets out to reinvent an everyday object that does not seems to need
reinvention. In this sense, phones, or what we call smartphones these days
considering they are incredibly well skilled, are the perfect example to show
it. To be precise, I’m talking about the coming LG U project.

LG Project 505: smartphones to start levitating
So whereas every smartphone company is crazy about becoming
the first to launch some kind of flexible or foldable smartphone, late in last
year the South Korean company LG U released a concept that was the perfect
appetizer but left us with an insatiable hungry-of-tech, so that we still have
hope the company will take action over the so called Project 505, a 2 in 1 of
drone and smartphone that might probably be a huge success.
At the very beginning, it would just simply look like a dull
idea to make phones able to fly, because… With which purpose? Though, the
project actually highlights some tech problems which smartphone brands were
ignoring so far, or were not facing them, in other words, and you’ll be shocked
to see how giving them the flying skill could change it all.
In a nutshell, inspired in one of our favorite gadgets
nowadays, the drones, the phone would have some sort of circular engines in the
back, imitating the popular, portable aircrafts. In which concerns to
smartphone advancement itself, the heart is in the camera and the way it
compliments the levitating skill.
Drone phone — The pros and cons
In this way, the camera’s playing a main role in the drone
phone stuff, and to show it, here the cool camera-based features offered by the
LG U brand on the Project 505: Flying Face Time mode, Moving Theater Movie
mode, 360º Extreme mode, Top Surround mode, and one where even the flash of the
photographer, levitating mobile is key, the Night Safety Mode.

Can you envision yourself having a video chat while driving,
cooking, or doing any activity where you cannot hold your phone by hands
because it is just flying in front of you? That’s the purpose of the first
mode, which complements with the other modes in a similar way. For example, the
Moving Theater Movie, 360º Extreme and Top Surround, are modes which consist in
the same idea: a phone that levitates around you so that you can enjoy movies
at your sofa, while doing extreme sports like bungee jumping, or making
incredible snaps partying on a rooftop or a boat.
On the other hand, the Night Safety mode is a nice
application of the camera’s flash, which fusioned with the drone skill, turns
out the phone into a flying flashlight that lights up the way for you. However,
some cities are not safe enough to go out with an expensive smartphone
following you through the air, and that would make some robbers happy.
Among other things, one of my favorite features is the
Self-Charge mode. How many times have you went to bed forgetting to put your
smartphone in charge? A drone capability in our phones could be the best answer
to this issue, programing the phone to fly straight away to the power supply
whenever you wish it.
nevertheless, it will be interesting how to make safe
propellers, considering nobody wants to cut their finger while on a phone call,
that a curious kid playing with the gadget gets hurt, or that something goes
wrong when the smartphone is in our pockets and then the calamity arrives if he
suddenly starts flying.
In any case, the LG U idea of a phone like the Project 505
that levitate to free our hands is a million-dollar idea, not to mention that
is an answer to the unsuccessful and non-practicals selfie sticks. Anyway, how
much would you pay for a phone of this kind? The prices could also beat those
of the last Apple iPhone, so prepare your wallet as well, though.
